چکیده

A common explanation for the limited distance traveled by NASA’s past and planned Mars rovers is the limits of solar power. This paper explores this hypothesis and documents a series of experiments with a solar powered rover. A detailed comparison between our rover and Sojourner, with regards to power usage, is presented. Experiments and analysis clearly show that other factors dominate in limiting the range of NASA’s solar powered robots when operating on Mars.

Experiments With a Long-Range Planetary Rover

SR2 is a solar powered autonomous planetary rover designed and built at the University of Oklahoma in collaboration with Malin Space Science Systems. This robot was created to explore the feasibility of long autonomous traverses through Marslike terrain – traverses in excess of a kilometer a day requiring no more than a single communications between the robot and mission control. This is a subs...

Vision-based Terrain Classification and Classifier Fusion for Planetary Exploration Rovers

Autonomous rover operation plays a key role in planetary exploration missions. Rover systems require more and more autonomous capabilities to improve efficiency and robustness. Rover mobility is one of the critical components that can directly affect mission success. Knowledge of the physical properties of the terrain surrounding a planetary exploration rover can be used to allow a rover system...

The Fog of War: A Machine Learning Approach to Forecasting Weather on Mars

For over a decade, scientists at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) have been recording measurements from the Martian surface as a part of the Mars Exploration Rovers mission. One quantity of interest has been the opacity of Mars’s atmosphere for its importance in day-to-day estimations of the amount of power available to the rover from its solar arrays. This paper proposes the use of neura...
